TOP TIP NO.1

HOW TO SAVE BOAT EXPENSES

Welcome to Ivan’s TOP TIP THURSDAY.

We’re starting with the BASICS.  “Change your Oil and Filters”.

This may seem like a very simple tip; who doesn’t know that you should be changing your oil to protect your engine?  Well, Ivan says that it’s the biggest cause of issues and one of the easiest and simplest actions to take to protect and preserve your engine.  Look after the basics and this will save you boat expenses in the long run.

Ivan states “the engine manufacturer recommends how often you should be changing your oil and oil filters”.  If you don’t know, call in to see Ivan and he can let you know.  Typically, it is every 100 hours of usage or 1 year; whichever comes soonest.  For sailboats, Ivan recommends changing after 1 season and before the boat is hauled.  You need to be avoiding the build up of sodium from the salt air which decalcifies the engine.

Over time, the simple thing to remember is that oil LOSES PROPERTIES.  It ceases to act as a good lubricant as it BREAKS DOWN over time.  Imagine two metal elements that have good, healthy oil running between them keeping them lubricated.  Imagine when that oil breaks down; the two pieces of metal start to rub against each other and cause damage.

When your engine is running, there is a chemical build up that creates carbon.  Engine oil facilitates the cleaning of the engine by absorbing carbon deposits, soot or sludge.  Over time, older oil stops absorbing carbon.

You wouldn’t ignore a service for your car, so take the same care over your boat engine, too, and it will save you money in the long run.
